The Ethics Hotline is NOT available to:
Do you have questions about judicial ethics? Speak to a judge on the Judicial Ethics Committee for a quick informal response to your questions about the Code of Judicial Ethics.
If judicial officers or judicial candidates have questions about the Code of Judicial Ethics call CJA at (916) 239-4068 or toll free at (866) 432-1CJA (1252) during CJA business hours and you will be referred directly to a judge on the Judicial Ethics Committee. The committee member, working with the vice-chair, will expeditiously give you advice (a tentative informal response). At its next meeting, the full committee will review this advice and immediately notify you of any changes. Your call is completely confidential. Your name will not be revealed, even to the other committee members.
For discussion of ethics issues, you may also check the Judicial Ethics Opinions & Updates and scan the Commentary by David Rothman in the California Judicial Conduct Handbook.
Please note that the Ethics Committee does not consider Fair Political Practices Commission (FFPC) regulations when providing ethics advice on gifts or income. Members are encouraged to examine FPPC rules concerning income or gift issues. (See FFPC Form 700 Information.)
For Ethics questions during Judicial Elections, please call the Hotline and indicate you'd like to speak with an Ethics Elections specialist. You may also consult the "Ethics in Judicial Elections" pamphlet.
