Committee Description:
The Judicial Outreach Committee's (JOC) mission is to support, promote and recognize outreach efforts by judicial officers. This includes a broad range of programs, activities and other efforts by judicial officers to educate the public about the work of the courts. The JOC works to help connect judicial officers with each other in order to share best practices as well as creative and effective outreach ideas and programs. The JOC is also responsible for vetting nominees for the Judicial Outreach Award presented by the CJA to recognize outstanding outreach efforts by a judicial officer or program.
Judicial outreach promotes the understanding of and trust and confidence in the administration of justice and is "considered an official judicial function." See Standard 10.5(a), Standards for Judicial Administration (2021). Among other things, the judiciary is encouraged to "[d]evelop local education programs for the public designed to increase public understanding of the court system" and "[t]ake an active part in the life of the community where the participation of the judiciary will serve to increase public understanding and promote public confidence in the integrity of the court system." See Standard 10.5(b).
